Wilson has Real ambition March 10, 2010

Wilson Palacios only arrived at White Hart Lane in January 2009 but he is already talking up his chances of moving to a ‘bigger club’ (his words).  The £12million midfielder apparently has his heart set on a move to Spanish superclub Real Madrid, according to the Sun newspaper anyway.

Here is what the Honduran has had to say:  “I am really happy at Tottenham but I will continue working for a future move to a bigger club.

“I would like to play for Real Madrid.

“Today, many people respect me in England. That’s because of my hard-working attitude.

I’m a big fan of Palacios and his commitment to the cause when on the pitch is always admirable.  Talking up a move to another side in the middle of the ‘business end’ of the season is most certainly not admirable though.  Spurs are in a battle for fourth, and it is a battle they have a very good chance of winning (although I’m not counting my chickens just yet) after Liverpool’s surprise slip at Wigan.  The timing of these comments is questionable, but so are the comments altogether.

Fans of any club other than the truly massive European sides will always fear the dreaded words ‘bigger club’ coming from their players – but why?  Why, mid season and with plenty to play for must some stars talk about moving on.  It wasn’t exactly as if Spurs saved him from Wigan, he is quality and had attracted attention which is why Harry Redknapp had to fork out that reported £12m to secure his services – but Spurs were the ‘bigger club’ a year ago and as he is yet to complete a full season it seems a bit rich to be talking up a move to the Bernabeu.  He may have been misquoted, or taken out of context and wanting to further your career isn’t a bad thing, but for me Wilson Palacios should have saved his comments until the end of the season or kept his mouth shut altogether.  For the record I would wish him well if he did win a move to Real, personally I think I’d prefer to play for Barcelona but only if they got rid of Thierry Henry first – like Palacios we’re all allowed to dream!

Phew, rant over.  In other midfield news Jamie O’Hara looks set for a summer move with Newcastle and Aston Villa rumoured to be keen on the player.  Despite some decent displays for Pompey this season it seems he is surplus to requirements and could well be on his way.  In fairness Palacios could take a leaf out of O’Hara’s book – he isn’t even a Pompey player and he isn’t talking about a summer move at the moment, just the task in hand for his current employers.
